Open Water World Champs 2009

For those that don’t know, the US Men had a successful showing at the Open Water 10km Swimming World Championships in Rome, as Andrew Gemmell and Fran Crippen placed 2-3 respectively. It wasn’t without controversy however, as Italy protested Crippen’s performance in the sprint finish as he found himself on the wrong side of the lane rope in the finish chute. At about the 1:35 mark of the video you can watch the “controversy” as it played out. Crippen kept his medal following an official complaint by the Italian team.
They’re flying pretty fast for a 10km swim – check the swells too – it wasn’t a calm day for sure.
