A short 8 months ago, Pine Surf Shop and Gallery opened on Long Beach Island to the local surf and art communities. EC had been following the scheduled opening, as a fan of Pine owner and artist, Julie Goldstein. Goldstein, her husband and some friends opened the store as not only a surf shop for the community but also as an outlet for their art, as well as the art of other local aspiring and established artists alike. Although in it’s infancy, the store had a real positive vibe and word of mouth was positive about Pine. Unfortunately, in late December 2008, a fire blazed through the store leaving barely anything salvageable.
They lost practically everything inside – including original PINE clothing and inventory, woodcuts and artwork by Julie and other contributing artists, and all the store inventory to include some rather high end retro surfboards, wetsuits and accessories.
Additionally, Julie lost everything for her personal line of apparel, ‘Perfect’, including woodcuts, blanks, supplies, patches and vintage fabrics – all used to create her unique line of garments.
Hopefully this catastrophic loss won’t mean the ultimate end to PINE – which was such a wonderful and warmly embraced endeavor. No word yet on plans to rebuild PINE, but here’s hoping:) For the time being, if you really need to find something representative of Julie’s art, there are a few tees for sale at Swell.
